Applying for a job shouldn’t be so difficult. As owner of an Executive Search Firm, I read and hear complaints every day about the difficulty of the application process. I hear the same complaints about the hiring process but that will be another article. I encourage HR Departments to realize how many valuable human assets they lose through their online application process.

In the world of online applications, it now takes a minimum of 30 to 45 minutes to complete the basic application — not including additional hours spent on assessment and personality tests. In the world of online applications, isn’t it time to ask “how many talented applicants will never be seen by your Hiring Managers because of your application process?” These are positions your Hiring Manager says he desperately needs to fill, right? The problem from my perspective: Most HR Department are too institutionalized and ‘rote’ in their behaviors to accommodate expedited hiring.

This may be a wake-up call for HR Departments! If your company branding is working; i.e., the applicants are finding your job site, why not make it a pleasure doing business with you? Stop wasting the time of your valuable applicants! It negates all of your positive and powerful brand marketing. If the resume (or LinkedIn Profile) isn’t enough for the FIRST STEP, then you should limit any additional required information so that your application can be completed in less than 15 minutes.

After the applications are quickly reviewed for creditable skills/experience for the position, THEN the Hiring Manager should be involved. Only after the Hiring Manager shows interest in pursuing the applicants(s) should the applicants be asked to complete the NEXT STEP of the screening process (assessment/personality testing). There is no logical reason why every single applicant should spend hours filling out applications that will never be seen by a Hiring Manager.

Recent surveys show that 42% of applicants having a negative experience with a company’s application process say that would never work for that company. Doesn’t that make you wonder how many talented applicants have been lost because of excessive and complicated online application processes? The solution really lies somewhere between a ‘digital experience like buying a book on Amazon’ and ‘filling out an online federal tax return’.

Very few companies, and even fewer recruiting software vendors, offer one-step apply capabilities. Instead, most have an extremely complex and convoluted application systems that require dozens of different clicks to do something as simple as submitting a resume to a job posting. This flies in the face of data from surveys that cite a 33% decrease in conversion by having a two-step apply process. Congratulations to the few companies who have simplified their online process and adopted a ‘one-step’ or ‘one click’ approach.

If you don’t know how many clicks your application process takes, then you should find out. Apply for one of your own listings without using any shortcuts. The answer, for most employers, will probably be both shocking and sobering. And, each and every one of those extra clicks is going to cost you great candidates. Many of your applicants often drop out of the process even before you’re able to capture their information. Many HR Reps and Hiring Managers sometimes have the attitude that an onerous application process somehow is an effective screening mechanism, and that “if they were motivated, they’d take the time to finish the application.” News flash: that’s a bunch of hooey!

How to Effective Read a Job Posting Description

How do I know if I qualify for this position? I get this question from my clients on a daily basis. Having a great resume will not help you if you are not applying for positions that set you up for an interview.

Job seekers get frustrated in there search because they don’t know what to look for.

Too many professionals read job postings, but don’t know what the hiring manager is truly seeking in a candidate. Many times the job seeker doesn’t receive the response they want from hiring managers because they lack the knowledge, skills, education, or experience.

Before you apply for another position, you need to ask yourself the following questions:

1. Do I have the experience that this position requires? – Job postings will have the minimum years of experience the candidate must have. If the employer asks for 5 years of experience and you are a recent college grad, or have 3 years of experience, then you will not meet the requirements of that particular job, and you will waste of your time and effort to applying for the role.

2. Do I have the education or training the position is asking the candidate to have? – The job description will indicate the education level the company would like you to have (i.e. high school diploma, some college, bachelors’ degree). If you did not graduate from a university or college and this is the minimum requirement, then your chances of getting an interview are slim to none.

3. Are you qualified? – Job postings will have the required qualifications that will be considered for the position. Some postings will list 3 or 4 required skills while others may list 10+. Read this section carefully. This area of the posting will provide keywords to include in your resume, and will also provide you with the list of responsibilities that you will be expected to complete if you are hired. Your resume should highlight achievements in most of these areas. If not, then the hiring manager will not consider you the right candidate for that role.

Accurately reading a job description is imperative. If you don’t then you won’t get an interview. Don’t waste your time applying to positions when your skills, education, and/or experience do not meet what the posting is asking candidates to have.

Retraining Our Workforce For Our Future Economy

Every time there is an election the United States, politicians get up at panel debates and roll-out their plans to either create jobs or help retrain the workforce with the skills necessary for the jobs that are available. Most of this is political rhetoric and malarkey. First, government isn’t very good with creating jobs, unless it hires a bunch of people for the bureaucracy, but if it does it has to borrow money or raise taxes which hurts the economy and the currency. Worse, it takes money away from consumers who would spend it and buy something while enjoying their quality of life and standard of living, or from a business that would re-invest that money to create jobs. Suffice it to say, it doesn’t work.

Retraining is much harder than it appears, governments do this very poorly, it usually never works and they always misappropriate resources and miss estimate how many or few workers are needed. If we follow the theories of the Singularity Institute, some of which makes a lot of sense, we think we see where we will need the labor in the future and yet, we are usually wrong, even though many in the Futurists type groups and the Singularity Institute are totally in the pipeline of the latest and greatest emerging technologies – ie… those creating the future are the only ones who can predict it.

We cannot spend money paying people to go to training as if it were a job (extended unemployment benefits) and then expect those exact jobs to be there once these individuals have completed two-years of training.

Another challenge is that many believe “we will build it and they will come” but will they? Just because you have a training program doesn’t mean anyone will sign up or take it seriously. If we assign people to do certain training using a career guidance counselor, well we know how worthless those folks are, and exactly how will we do that? Assigning jobs to people based on what? IQ level, age, race, athletic ability, work experience isn’t always in line with what “The Individual” might see as meaningful work.

Sounds a lot like Communism and you know Communism sure has its flaws, even if it might be the most apropos for a “Space Colony” just getting started. Our current government has done a horrible job in the retraining of humans for jobs. Past performance generally is the best indicator of future success, do you agree.

Worst of all, government sponsored job retraining benefits corporations, as the taxpayer is now paying their training costs, and usually the corporations with the best lobbyists get to pick the curriculums while other industries have to train their employees themselves, albeit way more efficiently – so how is that ‘fair for all concerned’ Mr. Rotarian and king of the local government-business partnerships in your city and mine? Just sayin’.
